In the centre of the northern Italian town of Cortina d’Ampezzo, a short distance from Corso Italia and the cable car up Mount Faloria, the Grand Hotel Ampezzo — one of the key symbols of local hospitality, dating back to 1923 — has regained its place of honour in the urban landscape.
It had lain abandoned for over twenty years, until it was partially demolished, rebuilt, and expanded in a complex operation led by AI Progetti that returned the building to its original splendour.
The new Ampezzo has retained some of the features that made it recognizable over the ages: the regular layout of its façades, its balconies, its corner turrets, its skylights, and its lavish roof, clad entirely in pre-weathered Grey Rock titanium-zinc zintek®.
But this is not a simple copy of the past; it is a new piece of architecture that preserves the memory of the former structure. The Grand Hotel Ampezzo provides five-star Superior accommodation for the modern traveller, incorporating rooms and suites, restaurants and social spaces, a meeting room and a large wellness area.
In the focus article on our website we describe the renovation process, revealing the hotel’s history and the main stages in its transformation.
