The redevelopment of the Grand Hotel Ampezzo, in the centre of Cortina<\/strong>, transformed the historic hotel through partial demolition, reconstruction, and extension. The project preserved the building\u2019s compositional features while adding new hospitality spaces and three basement levels housing car parking and a wellness area.<\/p>\n

In this reorganization, the titanium-zinc zintek\u00ae<\/sup> roof took on a central role<\/strong>: its complex geometries called for tailor-made solutions to connect the roof pitches, protect openings and projecting volumes, and accommodate building services. Having presented the work \u2014 realized by the construction company CEV S.p.A.<\/strong><\/a> \u2014 in the newsletter \u201cZintek for Grand Hotel Ampezzo in Cortina\u201d<\/strong><\/a>, we now take a closer look at the design solutions developed by Zintek.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The L-shaped roof, with a timber load-bearing structure, is clad in pre-weathered Grey Rock titanium-zinc zintek\u00ae<\/sup>, installed using double-seaming<\/strong>. The cladding build-up comprises rigid insulation, a breathable waterproofing membrane, a ventilation cavity, and spaced fir boarding, on which a sound-deadening drainage mat is laid beneath the metal covering.<\/p>\n

At changes of direction and pitch, the flat patterns, cutting, and folding of the panels were defined using three-dimensional modelling tools: an approach that increased the precision of prefabrication and kept on-site tolerances to a minimum.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

The spacing of the seams<\/strong> was also calibrated to the position of the dormers, which are joined to the main roof surfaces without interrupting the continuity of the cladding. Small gutter channels protect the windows, diverting water sideways onto the roof pitches.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

The snow guard system<\/strong> was designed according to local snow loads: triple-tube elements with support ties protect the eaves area, while seam-mounted snow-stop clamps are distributed across the entire roof surface.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

In the central section of the roof, with a pitch of around 7%, the opening rooflights are installed on raised upstands with perimeter insulation<\/strong> to keep out water and snow. Beneath the upper flashing, a nanogel panel with low thermal conductivity prevents thermal bridging.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

The upgrade of the hotel\u2019s services required new elements for ventilation, extraction, and air intakes<\/strong>. Custom-designed and clad in zintek\u00ae, these elements blend into the overall design while maintaining a uniform appearance. For the ventilation stacks<\/strong>, the design took into account snow accumulation, potential condensation, and access for maintenance, with removable caps.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t
